🎨 Pio Monte della Misericordia: History and Art
The Pio Monte della Misericordia was founded in 1602 by seven young Neapolitan nobles with the aim of practicing the seven corporal works of mercy: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, visiting the imprisoned, visiting the sick, sheltering pilgrims, and burying the dead .
The picture gallery, located on the first floor of the building, houses an extraordinary collection of 17th and 18th century Neapolitan paintings, but the absolute masterpiece is undoubtedly Caravaggio’s altarpiece.
🖼️ Caravaggio’s Seven Works of Mercy
Painted by Caravaggio during his first Neapolitan sojourn in 1607, this masterpiece represents one of the highest peaks of art of all time. The Lombard painter managed to condense the seven works of mercy into a single scene, with an innovative composition and dramatic use of light that would become the hallmark of his style .
What makes this painting unique:
· Innovative composition: the seven works are represented simultaneously, without narrative separation
· Caravaggesque light: the beam of light illuminating the scene creates a theatrical effect of extraordinary power
· Realism of characters: faces and figures are portrayed with raw realism, typical of Caravaggio’s style
· Hidden symbolism: the angel in the center of the scene, supported by two figures, represents Divine Mercy
🏛️ The Monumental Complex
In addition to the picture gallery, the Pio Monte della Misericordia complex includes:
· The 17th-century church, with its elegant Baroque architecture
· The cloister, an oasis of peace in the heart of the city
· The historical archives, preserving centuries-old documents of the institution’s charitable activity
