π Naples Cathedral: A Complex of Wonders
10 minutes on foot from our B&B, Naples Cathedral offers much more than the famous Gothic cathedral:
The Cathedral
Built at the behest of Charles II of Anjou between the 13th and 14th centuries, it features a 19th-century neo-Gothic facade hiding an interior rich in works of art and historical testimonies .
The Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro
A masterpiece of Neapolitan Baroque, it houses the relics of the patron saint, including the famous vials of his blood. The chapel is decorated with frescoes by Domenichino and Lanfranco and preserves precious silver statues and votive objects donated by popes, kings, and citizens .
The Basilica of Santa Restituta
Dating back to the 4th century, it is the oldest early Christian basilica in Naples. Inside is the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte, considered the oldest baptistery in the West, with precious 5th-century Byzantine mosaics .
The Museum of the Treasure of San Gennaro
Adjacent to the Cathedral, the museum exhibits an extraordinary collection of goldsmiths’ work, sacred vestments, and votive objects accumulated over nearly seven centuries of devotion. Among the most precious pieces is the saint’s miter, studded with 3,964 gems including diamonds, rubies, and emeralds .
π The Miracle of San Gennaro
Three times a year (the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, September 19, and December 16), thousands of faithful gather in the Cathedral to witness the prodigy of the liquefaction of San Gennaro’s blood. When the blood liquefies, it is considered a good omen for the city; if the miracle fails to occur, disasters are feared, as happened before World War II and a cholera epidemic .
