Stop 1: Piazza del Gesù Nuovo – The Code in the Stones
Distance from The Neapolitan B&B: 30 meters (1 minute)
Start your journey right outside our door. The Church of Gesù Nuovo has a unique facade made of diamond-point ashlars. But look closer: those pyramid-like stones are not just decorative. According to legend, the symbols carved into them compose a musical score in Aramaic. Others believe they are linked to esoteric practices and alchemy. Some even say the church hides clues to the Holy Grail.
In the center of the square, the Obelisk of the Immaculate also carries hidden symbols waiting to be deciphered.

Stop 2: Monastery of Santa Chiara – The Ghost of Queen Joanna
Distance from previous stop: 2 minutes
Right across the square lies the complex of Santa Chiara. Don’t let its serene beauty fool you. Legend says that the ghost of Queen Joanna I of Anjou, assassinated in 1382, wanders the cloister. Meeting her gaze is said to bring bad luck. The cloister itself, with its beautiful majolica tiles, is a peaceful spot, but the story adds a shiver to your visit.
Stop 3: The “Triangle of Power” – Spaccanapoli’s Esoteric Heart
As you walk along Spaccanapoli, you enter what esoteric tradition calls the “Triangle of Power”. The three vertices are:
1. Piazza San Domenico Maggiore – where we are heading
2. The Statue of the God Nile – in Piazzetta Nilo
3. The Sansevero Chapel – our next stop
This area was once a “Place of Power,” where ancient Egyptian rites and alchemical practices allowed initiates to contact the transcendent.
The Statue of the God Nile (Piazzetta Nilo, 3 minutes from our B&B) testifies to the strong Egyptian community that lived here in the 1st century BC, bringing the cult of the goddess Isis, often associated with the Virgin Mary.

Stop 4: Sansevero Chapel – The Alchemist Prince
Distance from previous stop: 5 minutes
The Cappella Sansevero is the crown jewel of Naples’ esoteric heritage. Commissioned by the enigmatic Prince Raimondo di Sangro—scientist, alchemist, and possibly sorcerer—the chapel is a concentration of symbolism and mystery.
Here you will find:
· The Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino: So realistic that legend says the veil was “marmorized” through an alchemical process.
· The Anatomical Machines: Two skeletons with an almost intact arterial and venous system. How they were preserved remains a mystery to this day.
Prince Raimondo was a Freemason and alchemist, and the entire chapel is filled with esoteric symbols. Some say he even discovered the secret of creating life.

Stop 5: Via dei Tribunali and the Cult of the “Anime Pezzentelle”
Distance from previous stop: 5 minutes
Moving to the other ancient decumanus, Via dei Tribunali, you encounter the Church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco. This church is the home of the cult of the “anime pezzentelle” (poor souls). In the crypt, Neapolitans “adopt” anonymous skulls (capuzzelle), taking care of them in exchange for favors and protection. The most famous is the skull of Lucia, a young bride considered the protector of girls seeking love.
This practice reflects the deep Neapolitan connection between the living and the dead, a theme that runs through the city’s spiritual life.

Stop 6: Napoli Sotterranea and the Legend of the Munaciello
Distance from previous stop: 7 minutes
In Piazza San Gaetano, descend into the underworld. Napoli Sotterranea (Underground Naples) is a labyrinth of Greek and Roman tunnels that served as aqueducts and later as air raid shelters.
This is the birthplace of one of Naples’ most beloved legends: the Munaciello (the little monk). This spirit, dressed in a small monk’s habit, can bring good luck and money or play tricks on people. The legend may originate from the ancient pozzari (well workers) who used the tunnels to access houses. Even today, some say they feel a presence in the dark corridors.
Stop 7: Naples Cathedral – The Miracle of San Gennaro
Distance from previous stop: 10 minutes
Conclude your mystical journey at the Duomo of Naples, where the blood of the city’s patron saint, San Gennaro, is preserved. Three times a year, the city holds its breath for the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood. When the dried blood turns to liquid, it’s a good omen for Naples. If the miracle fails, disaster is feared—as happened before World War II and a cholera epidemic.
This is the most enduring miracle of Naples, a fusion of faith, science, and mystery that still defies explanation.

Evening Option: A Night Walk Through Mystical Naples
For the truly adventurous, explore the historic center at night, when the streets empty and the city reveals its darker side. Visit Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, where some say the spirit of Thomas Aquinas still studies in his cell. Walk along Via dei Tribunali, the reign of the Munaciello. And look up at the balconies and old buildings—you never know what you might see.
