🏰 A Stay in History: Palazzo Carafa della Spina
In the very heart of Naples’ historic center, along the ancient decumanus of Spaccanapoli, stands one of the city’s most fascinating noble residences: Palazzo Carafa della Spina. At Via Benedetto Croce 45, this magnificent 16th-century palace houses The Neapolitan B&B, offering travelers the unique opportunity to live within history while enjoying modern comfort and design .
The History of the Palace
At the end of the 16th century, Fabrizio Carafa della Spina, Prince of Butera and Roccella, acquired a small palace with a garden from Andrea Matteo IV Acquaviva d’Aragona. He demolished it to build a new, grander residence, likely designed by the renowned architect Domenico Fontana, who worked extensively in Naples and Rome .
The palace takes its distinctive name, “della Spina” (of the Thorn), from a precious relic once housed here: according to tradition, a thorn from Christ’s Crown was brought to Naples by Cardinal Oliviero Carafa and kept within these walls for centuries, forever linking the palace’s history to an aura of mystery and sacredness.
In the Baroque period, the building underwent significant renovations, particularly in the 18th century. The monumental portal, one of the most imposing in Naples, was added or remodeled at this time, possibly by architects Martino Buonocore or Ferdinando Sanfelice (the latter known for the nearby Palazzo Filomarino, which shares stylistic similarities) .
The Architectural Marvel
The facade of Palazzo Carafa della Spina is dominated by its breathtaking baroque portal, carved from dark volcanic piperno stone. Look closely, and you’ll discover a world of sculpted details :
· Two majestic satyrs serve as telamons, seemingly holding up the balcony above while supporting the Carafa family coat of arms.
· On the inner corners of the portal columns, two faces are carved—likely portraits of individuals connected to the owners.
· At the base, two marble sculptures of sea monsters with open jaws were once used to extinguish torches.
Beyond the entrance, a courtyard adorned with piperno columns leads to a monumental staircase with rounded arches, a perfect example of Neapolitan Renaissance architecture .

✨ The Veiled Christ: A Masterpiece Steps Away
One of the greatest privileges of staying at The Neapolitan B&B is the proximity to one of the world’s most extraordinary sculptures: the Veiled Christ (Cristo Velato), housed in the Sansevero Chapel Museum, just a 7-minute walk from our door .
About the Masterpiece
Created by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1753, the Veiled Christ is universally admired for the incredible realism of the transparent marble veil that covers the body of Christ. Legend has it that the veil was created through an alchemical process by the chapel’s patron, Prince Raimondo di Sangro, a scientist, inventor, and Freemason shrouded in mystery. In reality, Sanmartino’s chisel alone achieved this miracle of sculpture, carving a single block of marble to create the illusion of transparent cloth .
The chapel also houses other extraordinary works, including the Anatomical Machines—real human skeletons with intact circulatory systems, whose preservation method remains a mystery to this day.
